A Slack Message, Annotated

Hello from Steyer,

Each time I write an installment of Workings, I aim to give a glimpse behind the scenes.

Today, I figured I’d do something a little different: share an internal Slack message written by our COO Katelyn Reilly and briefly annotate it.

Three things I love about this message:

1. It mentions Suggestion Ox, the tool we use to get anonymous feedback and questions from people on the team. We believe that shaping a workplace is an ongoing, teamwide endeavor, and Suggestion Ox allows us to hear from more people on more topics.

2. Katelyn’s post embodies one of our core values: being crystal clear about what the business requires, but also giving everyone we work with (fellow adults! with rich lives! and their own agendas!) maximum latitude in terms of how they shape their days.

3. This is not hypothetical or aspirational. It’s real. While we are not set up to hire internationally, we’ve long supported U.S.-based talent wanting to work abroad for a period of time. In fact, at a recent in-person gathering, I was glad to see, and to hug, a colleague who’s spent a large chunk of this year working away from home—first in the U.K., then Spain, and most recently Bali! Describing her adventures, she was lit from within—exactly the sort of energy that’s needed to tackle hard things in hard times.

Thanks for reading,
Kate

P.S. Another core value is coming together on a regular basis, from wherever we are, to connect and to learn. More often than not, a discussion of good TV is involved. Our next open meetup is a week from today and will feature Deacon Turner, a member of the Cherokee Nation, discussing the depiction of Indian country in recent works. To join us, RSVP here.
