Sticking the Landing

Hello from Steyer,

I’m a writer at heart and by trade, and there’s just nothing like the deep joy of realizing I’ve somehow gotten a piece of my writing to live up to my own hopes for it. On the Christmas Day launch of my first (illustrated!) book, when I was in second grade, I watched my family members read my work in real time and carefully monitored their faces as each sentence washed over them. (Almost all of them looked sufficiently delighted, fortunately for my ego.) These days, I very rarely get to observe my readers; I have to take comfort in the feeling that I stuck the landing.

In June, as Steyer put together a story-heavy public-sector proposal, I had the chance to work with some of our talent on a video project. Along with our written proposal, we created a video with footage shot on-location in the forested, heavily ferned foothills of Washington state’s stunning Cascade mountain range. I met up with the project team at the shoot, and as a bonus, got in a little hiking plus a few scoops of excellent guacamole from a Mexican restaurant in Mt. Vernon afterward.

The video (which I’d love to share publicly after we learn the outcome of this RFP, if I can!) turned out beauuutifully. It hits the right emotional notes, the editing is clever and effective, and it shows off our motion graphics skills as well as our team’s remarkable camera work. I wish I could be there as the RFP reviewers watch, so I could see their faces light up. I’ll have to settle for the sheer joy of knowing, deep in my bones, that we got the storytelling right—and I’m so grateful to be working with people who can create magic out of thin mountain air with just a camera, some editing tools, and an abundance of human creativity.

Hope this summer holiday week finds you safe and sound!

Thanks,
Katelyn
